Exploring strong gravity: Black holes inside and out

The recent detection of gravitational waves emitted from binary black hole coalescences, as well as the first image of black holes, are two important breakthroughs in modern physics. These two achievements have ushered in a golden era in which exploring strong gravity regimes, such as the vicinity of black holes, becomes attainable. In particular, the ringdown signals during the post-merger phase and the critical curve hidden inside the black hole image directly carry information unique to the black hole spacetime, making them excellent tools to test gravity. In this talk, I will exhibit some different aspects of how one can probe black hole spacetimes using these excellent tools. Possible applications include testing the Kerr hypothesis, fundamental symmetries in general relativity, modified gravity, and even quantum gravity. Future prospects and challenges of this project will also be discussed.
