The Kondo effect is named after Jun Kondo, who contributed significantly to its explanation more than 30 years after its first observation.
In the 1970s and 1980s, the Kondo effect was essential in developing renormalization group techniques in condensed
matter science. In more recent years, the discoveries of unconventional quantum criticality, bad metal, and non-Fermi liquid phases in various materials classes have led to a renewed interest in the role played by Kondo screening [1].
In this talk, I will review the basics of Kondo physics and discuss some of the more modern developments, i.e., critical Kondo destruction
and its experimental signatures in rare earth intermetallics [2] and the observation of an orbital two-channel Kondo effect in IrO2 [3].
