I will introduce the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI), concentrating on its Milky Way Survey (MWS). With DESI MWS, we will carry out spectroscopic observations of more than 7 million very distant stars in our galaxy, to learn about its ancient history and
its dark matter content. This is the field of “galactic archaeology”: using observations of individual stars in the very nearby universe to explore the complex relationships between galaxies and their dark matter halos. I’ll talk about the theoretical work I and my group are doing in support of DESI, and how we hope to make progress on some of the most pressing questions facing galactic archaeologists. DESI MWS started in 2021 and will continue until 2026: I will briefly describe the first public release of DESI spectra, which will happen in the next few months."
